Write What You're Not: Teaching Character Analysis Through Persona Poetry

ELA

The point of view of the storyteller has a significant impact on the way the story is told. Imagine reading Little Red Riding Hood from the perspective of the wolf or Jack and the Beanstalk in the voice of the giant. In this workshop, teachers will develop empathy and understanding for characters that are often cast in a negative light through close reading, character analysis and the writing of persona poems. We will explore the ways in which a character’s point of view can influence a story’s narrative and craft persona poems that embody the voice and mind of fictionalized characters.
