Moments In History

International School of Louisiana, 4th Grade | Social Studies & Theatre

Ms. King

The 4th graders are currently learning about how the United States came to be a country. We’ve had a lot of discussions about what revolution, and liberty mean. We’ve looked at colonialism from one perspective, but there are many sides to a story. You want to make sure you’re looking at as many sides as possible if you want to know the true history.

Students studied paintings that depicted certain events in this time period. We imagined how each character in the painting felt. Then they wrote monologues from the point of view of any character they chose from the paintings.

I intend to keep using the strategy of monologue when we want to try and understand the cause and effect of moments in history, or the reasons people currently make the choices they make.
