3rd Graders are reading about The Titanic, and also learning the Theatre strategy of Monologue.

They entered the strategy by way of an I Am Poem, which is something they have done since 2nd grade. An I Am Poem is a great way to frame the first draft of a monologue.

First, they looked at one of the illustrations in the book, and chose a character. Then they froze in a Tableau as that character, and tried to express what that character was feeling.

Then, they wrote an I Am poem from the point of view of their chosen character, named the character, picked a voice that would make sense for the character, and performed their I Am Poems for the class.
