Instrument Families

With everything going on in the world, this school year has gotten off to a rocky start. It just so happened that my first lesson coincided with a hurricane and massive power outages and wasn’t able to happen as planned. Because of this, I decided to combine my intro lesson with my first official lesson by making it relevant to what the students were learning in the class. They were learning about animal defenses and how adult animals look different from their offspring , So I decided to pair that with the idea of instrument families and created a lesson where we compared and contrast an instrument families to different types of animals.

At the beginning of each video I introduced two types of instrument families and audio examples of each. I also briefly went over the concept of comparing and contrasting using a Venn diagram. I then gave an example of one difference for each and a comparison for both.

Finally, I put a 15 minute timer in the video for students to work on their own van diagrams and close the video by sharing what I came up with and threw it back to the teacher to facilitate discussion amongst students to share what they came up with.
