Notes from the field 3 of 3: Implementing virtual arts integration lessons during a public health crisis requires students, teachers, administrators, and artists to utilize effective communication skills. Effective communication happens when the ‘receiver gets the message the sender intends’. These communication skills include active listening, clarifying, and summarizing. Because of the pandemic most communication between artists, teachers, administrators, and students happens via telephone or online.

Summarizing: To briefly restate, or retell important information about a topic or situation (planning, lesson, schedule, location).  Allowing time to repeat expectations and responsibilities helps to facilitate a more desirable outcome.  Because teaching and learning have moved from in-person to virtual and back again teachers, students, parents, artists, and administrators are tasked to be more flexible and communicative.  Effective Communication skills such as active listening, clarifying, and summarizing affords participants a real opportunity to adapt, adjust, and implement meaningful arts integrated lessons and experiences during a once in a life time public health event.
