Learning About Adjectives

Langston Hughes Academy
1st Grade, ELA + Visual Art & Poetry
Ms King / Ms. Ivory / Ms. Wilkey / Ms. Goodrich

First graders are learning about adjectives in their ELA classes. We read My People by Langston Hughes with amazing portraits by Charles R. Smith Jr., and talked about the adjective he uses to describe the stars, the sun, the eyes, and souls of his people. We defined self portraits, and talked about the symmetry of a face, and the many shapes parts of the face take when you feel certain emotions. Using crayons to measure distance from eyebrow to mouth, or ear to eye, we drew ourselves as we would want to be seen. Then we thought of adjectives we would use to describe ourselves, and put them right on our self portraits! We then brainstormed different adjectives that describe the nouns Langston Hughes used in his poem, and collaboratively rewrote the poem in the style of our people!
