SERIES: Collage For Community, Collaboration & Connection

Creating Community plays a key role in building joyful and nurturing learning opportunities! Follow along with Ms. Mia & ReNEW’s “Substantially Separate” classrooms as she uses the art of collage to foster fruitful collaboration and create accessible spaces for all learners!

As we continue to explore collage, we brought in the vocabulary of SAME & DIFFERENT to align and lift up some of the matching and sorting skill-building happening in Ms. Sullivan’s classroom. We explored our vocabulary in two movement games- “Follow the Leader” and “Do Something Different” and then created a collaborative classroom collage. When the teacher held up a pre-cut piece- students checked to see if their piece was the SAME or DIFFERENT before taking a turn adding it to the class collage.

In small group centers, all students were given the SAME exact sets of pre-cut pieces to create their collage. We spent some time wondering and guessing if our individual pieces would look exactly alike or very different. Students were free to arrange their pieces in any way on their paper. At the end, we did a gallery walk to see if our pieces were the SAME or DIFFERENT and, sure enough, every piece was as unique and wonderful as the student that created it!
