Field Drawings

Ms. Andrea / Ms. Morales and Ms. Urena

Back in January, Ms. Morales, Ms. Urena, and I brought our kindergarten science classrooms/art studios outside to explore trees and plants through field drawing.

For our first of two outdoor lessons, we drew trees. We focused first on the big picture: the trees’ silhouettes (their outlines and overall shapes). Next we focused on details: different textures and especially evidence of animals, such as woodpecker holes or chewed leaves.

For our other outdoor lesson, we drew the life cycle of a plant. We composed our drawings as comics, using four frames (or panels). We looked for and drew four different plants, arranging them sequentially from just sprouted to flowering.

Not only did we get to enjoy the beautiful weather of New Orleans in January, we also deepened our learning in science and art—experiences we’ll never forget!
