The Work 2 of 3

Arts Integration In Action

International School of Louisiana West Bank
2nd Grade | Social Studies & Drama/Theatre

Arts Integration happens in the classroom when an academic or social emotional learning objective is accomplished alongside an arts objective. Teachers and students are asked to think of themselves as artists while identifying criteria for each objective. Utilizing arts vocabulary, demonstrating arts strategies and techniques are essential in order to ensure ‘arts integration’ occurs.

Mr. Carlos’ 2nd grade students have been learning about the three branches of government: Judicial, Legislative, and Executive. Students were asked to define each branch of government; identify participants, and functions. While learning about each branch of government, students identified criteria for arts strategies ‘tableau, and pictures to life’. A tableau is a frozen picture or image that must include emotions/feelings, facial expressions, levels, and body language. Participants practice then share utilizing the prompt 1,2,3 picture. ‘Picture to Life’ happens when a ‘tableau’ is brought to life with actions and dialogue utilizing the prompt 1,2,3 action.

Students articulate who they are (character) where they are (setting) and what’s happening. Each session includes a debrief and reflection where students are asked about what happened, what was easy/difficult, how did it feel, and what did they learn?
