Louisiana Culture Comics

Esperanza Charter School
3rd, Visual Art & Social Studies
Ms. Andrea / Ms. Smallwood

As an introduction to, and celebration of, Louisiana culture, 3rd grade social studies students made their own comics!

We discussed and drew different characteristics of Louisiana culture in a four-panel comic, one panel each for category: Food, Celebrations, Art/Music, and Language.

This lesson was also our introduction to comics! We used tools such as speech bubbles and camera zoom to help us draw.

Ms. Smallwood then joined the students’ comics into a quilt-like tapestry of Louisiana culture. The work will be on display at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art this spring!
