The Moton Art Wall

Robert Moton Charter School | All classes

As part of my residency at Moton, I’ve been working on creating and maintaining the “Moton Art Wall”. At the start of my residency, I was asked to hang some of the artwork done by my students up on the front entrance hallway. The general idea behind the “Moton Art Wall” is that it would allow students to display their artwork once they had completed it, and it gave students that were not participating in KID smART classes an opportunity to see all the hard work we’d been creating and possibly inspire others to make art of their own.

The “Moton Art Wall” became one of my regular daily tasks and incredibly rewarding at that. My students would see me hanging their artwork in the hall on their way to lunch. I also met more of the school faculty by catching passers-by or sparking conversations over a particular piece of art or activity. The “Moton Art Wall” started as a small section at the front entrance and soon grew to stretch all the way down the gym! Young artists would point at their work on the wall and say, “Hey! I made that!” or “I know that artist!”.
