Recap Rhythm Raps

Einstein Village de l’Est

2nd Grade ELA - Music

Mr. Miller | Ms. Gray | Ms. Daggs

In Second Grade ELA, Students have been learning about the Wild West, Pioneers, and Native Americans. They’ve been reading books like “The Buffalo are Back”, “The Legend of The Bluebonnet” and “Johnny Appleseed” and practicing restating key details from the text.

Each week, Students brainstorm all the key details, characters, and plot points in the text. We write them all down on the board so that students will have a bank of details to pull from later in the lesson when they write raps based on details from the text.

We started by making a connection between how we count syllables and how many sounds are in a rhythm.

Empowered with this knowledge, Students were able to write their own 8 beat rhythm patterns and pair them with details from the text.

At the end of each lesson, a few students share their Recap Raps with the class and we work together to workshop any mistakes and give meaningful feedback.

Our earlier lessons used quarter notes and pairs of eighth notes, but as the students grew more comfortable working with these note values,we also introduced half notes and whole notes. For our final lesson of the semester, we let the students create raps about their class and their excitement for the holidays.
