It's Alive!: Creating Our Monster Best-Friends

Esperanza, 4th Grade | ELA & Visual Art

Ms. Andrea

Ms. Dobard's 4th-grade ELA students have been working to integrate fictional characters into the creation of cut-out collages. We borrowed this activity from Kurt Wooton, who happened to be a recent national presenter at KID smART's AXIS program! First, we discussed what makes a good friend; the monsters we were creating were going to be our best friends. Next we planned our monsters. We drew sketches of them and filed out a social media profile for them.

We looked at the work of artist Henri Matisse to see the possibilities of paper, what he called "drawing with scissors." We then built our monsters using layers of construction paper. Finally, we introduced our creations to the class, even giving our monsters a chance to say their favorite saying — in their own voice — to the class!
