In third grade, students are learning about Louisiana and exploring the question, “What makes Louisiana unique?” They learned about the five regions of Louisiana (North Louisiana, Central Louisiana, Acadiana, Florida Parishes, and Greater New Orleans) and their cultural counterparts (Sportsman’s Paradise, Crossroads, Cajun Country, Plantation Country, and Greater New Orleans). In our arts integrated classes, students learned about the four kinds of artistic lines (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and curved) and how artists use lines to create shapes. Students then used lines and shapes to design symbols that represent the regions of Louisiana, keeping in mind what is special and unique to each region. Next, students learned about acrostic poetry and wrote acrostic poems inspired by Louisiana. Finally, students compiled their map and poem together into their very first book all about Louisiana!
