For the Birds: 3D Bird Nest Collages

Esperanza, 1st Grade | ELA & Visual Art
Ms. Andrea

In first grade ELA with Ms. Small, students learned all about birds: vocabulary such as feathers, nests, and eggs. What better way to learn these words than to create 3D, or three-dimensional nests?

First, we tore paper. We learned how to hold the paper to go along with the grain. Then we crumpled our paper strips a bit to give them texture. Next, we layered strips onto our base layer, gluing them in the middle so the ends could remain 3D. Finally, we looked at the shape of eggs, cut some out, and glued them into the center of our nests.

What a great way to learn how birds care for their young, just like we read about in ELA!
